Support NWHH for Giving Tuesday

Northwest Hope and Healing’s virtual gala on Saturday November 21 has been extended to include Giving Tuesday.

Our recent gala commemorating 20 years of resilience as a community raised over $200,000 for local women who are struggling to pay for everyday basics while receiving cancer treatment. But the need is greater than ever right now.

The economic impact of the pandemic has been particularly difficult for individuals and families already struggling to pay for basic necessities while undergoing cancer treatment.

In order to help us provide the necessary assistance to our community, please consider making a donation to NWHH for Giving Tuesday. Your donation will help us continue providing immediate financial assistance to local women undergoing cancer treatment to help them cover the costs of rent, groceries, transportation, and more.

If you were unable to join us for the live-streamed event, you can watch the full recording here—featuring testimonials from physicians, as well as past and current cancer patients—to see first-hand the difference that your dollars make for a local woman in need!

These funds will help women who are receiving treatment for breast and gynecologic cancers pay for everyday basics. Sincere thanks to everyone who donated, with special thanks to our wonderful musicians, Dain Weisner and Ryan Mathews, and to Uphill Designs for hosting us in their beautiful space!

Mystery Box Fundraiser Success!

Thank you to Mystery and everyone who purchased a Mystery Box in support of Northwest Hope & Healing!

In accordance with social distancing measures, Mystery has created a collection of “Mystery Night In” packages that provide all the excitement and surprise of a night out from the comfort of your own home.

In recognition of the important work being done by NWHH, Mystery put together a special package just for us and generously agreed to donate 20% of all sales. We sold over 50 boxes and raised $3,500 for local women receiving treatment for breast and gynecologic cancers!

Northwest Hope & Healing celebrated our community on July 23rd with a virtual happy hour where we unboxed our Mystery Night In packages together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a terrific night!

Support in Style 2020

Thank you to everyone who shopped online to support NWHH during Support in Style 20!

Northwest Hope & Healing was proud to partner with the following local boutiques to raise funds for Seattle women in need:

These wonderful boutiques put together beautiful packages and donated a portion of the sales to NWHH. Thank you JJ CapricesBukiSassafras, and Divalani for helping us keep the spirit of our Style Fundraiser alive with this luxurious event.

Thanks to your support, we raised over $500! That’s enough to provide five women with gas cards so that they can get to and from cancer treatment without having to rely on public transportation. Your donations make a real difference in the lives of men and women living with cancer!

Swedish Medical Center Talks about Northwest Hope & Healing

Northwest Hope and Healing — A Community Rallying Around Women With Cancer

Originally published on the Swedish Foundation Website

Cancer is challenging enough on its own. For patients struggling to pay everyday expenses while balancing the cost of their medical care, it can compound an already stressful experience.

“Nobody chooses to get cancer,” says Karyn Blasi Hellar, executive director of Northwest Hope & Healing (NWHH) since 2017. “It’s not fair.” She’s heard from women who have lost their jobs and insurance, gone through divorces and even given birth, all while fighting cancer.

That’s why she’s passionate about providing financial relief and support through NWHH for patients undergoing treatment for their breast and gynecological cancers at the Swedish Cancer Institute.

Founded in 2000, NWHH has raised more than $1.5 million dollars in the past 20 years to support our Patient Assistance Fund which provides grants to patients in need. Not only that, they also donate comforting items like scarves, tea and comfy slippers which NWHH volunteers assemble into Healing Gift Boxes.

For many NWHH volunteers, the work is personal. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Washington, and survivors and relatives make up the majority of NWHH’s volunteer force. Whether it’s assembling Healing Gift Boxes or helping at events, they’re supporting women through the financial challenges a cancer diagnosis can bring.

For some patients, the list of worries can feel endless, but a patient assistance grant made possible through NWHH can help cross off one thing, like groceries, utility bills, childcare or parking expenses for frequent hospital visits.

And the benefits go beyond the financial. While the average Patient Assistance Fund grant of $500 won’t solve every problem, just knowing that others care can be a comfort to women during their treatment. “It’s the small acts of kindness that make a big difference to these patients,” says Karyn.

Karyn brings 15 years of experience in breast cancer administration to this role, including managing breast imaging at Swedish where she saw first-hand the impact that cancer could have on patients. She also has an MBA, so she’s uniting her passion for women’s health with her business know-how. As NWHH’s only full-time employee, she’s determined to minimize costs wherever she can, including by working out of her home, rather than renting office space. Her goal is to make every donation and volunteer hour count.

“It’s amazing to see how kind and generous people can be,” she says. “I’m inspired by our community every day.” And thanks to the NWHH community, more than 400 women in the last year alone received help.

NORTHWEST HOPE & HEALING (NWH&H) ANNOUNCES SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL FASHION SHOW FUNDRAISER FEATURING LOCAL MODELS IMPACTED BY BREAST OR GYNECOLOGICAL CANCER

  • Funds Raised Benefit Local Women* Who Are Undergoing Breast and Gynecological Cancer Treatment at Swedish Cancer Institute and Struggling to Meet Basic Financial Obligations

  • Since 2000, NWH&H Has Provided 10,000+ Healing Gift Boxes and Raised Nearly $2M in Funds to Assist More Than 2,500 Local People In Need

—————————————

SEATTLE, April 3, 2019 — Northwest Hope & Healing, a Puget Sound-based 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation that provides immediate financial assistance to women who are undergoing breast or gynecologic cancer treatment at Swedish Cancer Institute, announced today that the organization’s premiere fundraising event, STYLE ’19, will be held on June 7, 2019 at the King Street Ballroom in downtown Seattle.

“Unfortunately, for many women, breast or gynecological cancer is not only a health emergency but also a financial catastrophe,” said Karyn Blasi-Hellar, executive director of Northwest Hope & Healing. “Imagine sitting in chemo while worrying about how to put food on the table, or facing surgery while worrying about paying for childcare. We believe that cancer is hard enough, and that nobody should have to face hunger, eviction, or having the lights turned off during treatment due to a lack of funds. The money we raise during our annual Fashion Shows allow us to give immediate financial assistance to these women in need at Swedish Cancer Institute by offering both financial grants, as well as comforting Healing Baskets to let them know they are not alone.”

In 2018, NWH&H gave 400 grants to patients in need, totaling a record breaking $140,000 and hand-delivered more than 300 healing baskets. Since its inception in 2000, the organization has provided over 10,000 Healing Baskets to newly diagnosed breast or gynecological cancer patients, and raised close to $2,000,000, which has assisted over 2,500 patients and their families in financial need.

“I have been personally moved by this organization and what they do to support both women and men who are going through some of the worst times in their lives,” said Shelly Hughes, a past grant recipient and volunteer model coordinator for the show. “Like me, many of this year’s models have been directly impacted by cancer – several are survivors or even currently undergoing treatment. To watch them walk on stage in front of so many people, all in support of women and their families in the Pacific Northwest, is both inspiring and truly humbling.”

STYLE ’19 will begin at 5:30pm with a cocktail hour where guests can enjoy bubbles, cocktails and appetizers while they mingle and check out a variety of silent auction items. The fashion show, featuring styles from local boutiques and couture designers, will begin at 7:00pm and will include a live auction and paddle raise, followed by an after-the-show dance party.

Tickets are now available for purchase here. For those unable to attend, or who are feeling generous, a “Sponsor a Model” option is also available and will allow for more of our model’s friends and family to come cheer them on while they strut the runway.

*Occasionally, NWH&H also helps men diagnosed with breast cancer. Approximately 2,600 men in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer annually.

Our Annual Style 19 Fashion Fundraiser Was a Huge Success!

Our annual Style ’19 fashion show raised almost $400,000 to support the work of Northwest Hope and Healing!

This year’s glamorous event was held on Friday June 7 at the King Street Ballroom, where we had an amazing night bidding on fabulous packages, cheering on patient and survivor models as they walked the runway, and listening to our inspirational keynote speaker, Courtney, share her story of hope and healing.

Through your compassionate giving, women and men facing diagnosis will know that they are not alone. You will make patients’ burdens a little lighter, and surround them with hope and healing in a time of fear and sadness. Words can’t express how much of a difference you’ll make in their lives.

Thanks to Our “Fab Five” Boutiques

Thanks to Thrive Causemetics!

We were honored to receive a donation of Thrive Causemetics to be used in two ways: 1)  by the makeup artists on our models; and (2) in our healing gift boxes that we give to all newly diagnosed breast or gynecological cancer patients at Swedish Hospital. Because of their generosity, we’ve been able to save on the expense of products while partnering with an organization that is passionate about similar causes.

Cork Fork Support 2018 was a success!

Our 2018 Fall Fundraiser was a Complete Success!

Over 100 supporters tasted local wines, cider and spirits, enjoyed delectable hors d’oeuvres, bid on awesome auction packages, and best of all… raised over $45,000 to support Northwest Hope & Healing!

A very warm thank you to all of you who joined us last night—including Jen Pricey, Jen Smiley, Kyle Johnson, all of our sponsors and donors, the wineries, distilleries, and breweries, our amazing volunteers, and the awesome Melrose Market Studios.

We also want to give a very big thank you to all of the social workers, patient education staff, and Dr. Tierney who participated in the night’s program.

Cork, Fork, & Support is just one of the ways we remain able to make an immediate difference to local women who are undergoing treatment at the Swedish Cancer Institute for breast or gynecologic cancer.

As one of Northwest Hope and Healing’s three major annual fundraisers, this event enables us to provide these women with immediate financial assistance—funds that can be applied towards everyday living expenses such as childcare or groceries, reliable transportation and/or emergency rent. With the holidays right around the corner, patients will be struggling even more. Some of these women would be unable to make an electric bill payment or even put food on the table for their children, were it not for our support.
